Generation Z (comprised of those born between 1996-2010) has most recently come up with the playful phrase, “OK boomer” in response to the Baby Boomer generation’s (comprised of those born between 1946- 1964) put down of more current ideas such as, not believing in climate change, LGBTQ+ rights, feminism, believing those with tattoos, piercings, and/or dyed hair can get a job, and more commonly the idea that both millennials and Gen Z have “Peter Pan syndrome” behavior, not wanting to grow up.

In response to the baby boomers unsolicited put downs the teenagers of today have started the phrase which quickly turned into an internet sensation, “OK boomer” to respond to the stereotypical ideas that the Boomer generation would typically disagree with and that the generational gap has caused great difference between. To the point where “Ok boomer” merchandise has been created (see photo.)

Joshua Citarella, 32, a researcher who studies online communities states,Gen Z is going to be the first generation to have a lower quality of life than the generation before them. Teenagers today find themselves, with three major crises all coming to a head at the Gen Z moment… Essentials are more expensive than ever before, we pay 50 percent of our income to rent, no one has health insurance,” said Mr. Citarella. “Previous generations have left Generation Z with the short end of the stick.”

The comical phrase was quickly turned negative by the Boomer twitter population, one user calling it an “ageist slur” and a form of discrimonation refers to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. To which the twitter page of Dictonary.com replied with creating a definition for the slang term (https://t.co/XUiCyEcHdW) What do you think about the new internet sensation? Is it playful? Or do you feel as if it is a form of ageist discrimination?
